This ancient volcano, dating back millions of years, dominates the skyline and is the most attractive mountaineering climb in Mexico. Orizaba offers interesting and varied climbing amidst a fascinating cultural backdrop. This 8-day mountaineering trip has a variety of wonderful experiences over a short time period.
Mountaineering on Mexico’s volcanoes is a great experience for our advanced beginners and intermediate mountaineering clients looking for a next adventure and an introduction to a high-altitude environment. It’s also a great opportunity for those advanced climbers looking to prepare for other high-altitude mountaineering expeditions. Climbing Orizaba provides a great opportunity to begin developing the experience and skills needed to succeed in some of the world’s highest mountains.
Climbers wishing to travel with us to mountaineer on Mexico’s volcanoes must have basic mountaineering skills, as Mexico’s volcanoes lack suitable low altitude areas to practice skills. Climbers also need to be in excellent physical condition, as climbing to almost 19,000 feet is not an easy task. Climbing Colorado’s 14ers is a great way to train and learn the necessary skills for climbing Mexico’s volcanoes – come and join us for some training and preparation.
Day 1: — Arrive and stay in Mexico City
Day 2: — Transfer to the small village of Huamantla
Day 3: — Acclimitazation climb of La Malinche Peak (14,640′) & transfer to Tlachichuca in p.m.
Day 4: — Transfer via Jeep to Piedra Grande Hut on Orizaba (13,900′)
Day 5: — Rest & Acclimate at the Piedre Grande Hut, with a day hike to high camp.
Day 6: — Move up to stay at high camp (~16,000′) for a summit attempt the next day.
Day 7: — Summit Day !!! and transfer to Tlachichuca in p.m.
Day 8: — Transfer to airport in Mexico City and depart in afternoon.
