New and Improved Trails in Crested Butte

The Benkwiths enjoy a short break from riding on the recently improved Lower Loop Trail in Crested Butte.

I finally got to ride the Lower Loop for the first time this season (what can I say, I’m a rock climber first and a mtn biker second) with the father/son team Sandy and Sanders Benkwith.  I was pleasantly surprised to find the trail in far better shape than it was last year.  The Lower Loop improvements were courtesy of volunteers from the Crested Butte Mountain Bike Association (CBMBA) who spent the early summer getting the trail dialed in, removing major obstacles, and slightly widening it to now accommodate hand cycles.

Tools of the trade.

If you’ve ever had the pleasure of cruising some sweet, flowy single track in the Upper Gunnison Valley chances are you were on a trail that CBMBA played a role in either creating, maintaining, or improving.   Thanks CBMBA!  As of late they’ve been hard at work on a new trail for the Crested Butte area.  Thanks to local easements made possible by agreements between private land owners, the town of Crested Butte, The Crested Butte Land Trust, and 1% for Open Space the new Baxter’s Gulch Trail will allow access to Whetstone Peak and ultimately will create sweet loops via Green Lake, Ohio Creek Road, Lily Lake, and Splain’s Gulch.  The trail will average roughly 8% grade and approximately 24″ across making it perfect for mtn biking and hiking.  The Baxter’s Gulch Trail is still a year or two away from being finished, but it’s going to be a fantastic and much anticipated addition to the CB trail system once it’s completed!

I recently had the opportunity to participate in a trail service day on Baxter’s Trail with some kid’s from Bold Earth, a CBMG partner that specializes in teen outdoor recreational adventures.  Here are some photos from our day of trail building …

And the day wouldn't be complete without one silly picture, right?

Thanks to the kids from Bold Earth for all their hard work and enthusiasm  and a huge shout out to Dave and Doug of CBMBA for giving us some trail building pointers and loaning us the tools for the day.

We’re all looking forward to enjoying the new Baxter’s Gulch Trail once it’s completed, but we’d like to remind everyone that as of now THE TRAIL IS CLOSED to the public.  Please respect this closure while the trail is being worked on and stay tuned for progress updates …
