Whether you're a skier, snowboarder or snowmobiler - our avalanche safety courses will make your favorite activities safer and more enjoyable. Learning how to use avalanche beacons and travel safely in the backcountry in winter makes good sense!
Crested Butte Mountain Guides offers professional Avalanche Safety Courses (Level 1 and 2), and our popular Refresher Course, throughout the entire state of Colorado. Our instructors help developed the standard avalanche course curriculum used across Colorado and the country known as AIARE (Avalanche Institute for Avalanche Research and Education). All our instructors are AIARE qualified.

Avalanche Safety Course Level IThe Level I Avalanche Safety Course is an introduction to avalanche hazards. You will learn the basics of how to recognize these hazards, how to manage them, how to minimize them, and finally how to respond in case of an emergency. Check out the LEVEL 1 HUT TRIP. Price includes hut fees and food. Call for more information. Avalanche Safety Course Level IIThe Level II Avalanche Safety Course is an introduction to snow metamorphism, guidelines and recording standards for weather, snowpack and avalanches, testing techniques and interpretation. Avalanche Refresher CourseThe Refresher Course format is a one day field based course designed to give students further instruction in travel techniques and terrain assessment, while also introducing new industry standards, cutting edge research, and discussions on the latest in backcountry gear development. If you are taking a Level II course this is also a great prep course.
