This course is designed for the advanced skier/rider who wants to take it to the next level. This course gives students an introduction to the techniques and mind set needed for true Colorado ski mountaineering. During the four day progression, the course covers some fundamental mountaineering skills such as: ice axe use, boot and ski crampon use, self arrest, anchor and belay rappel techniques, glacial travel, mixed climbing, steep skinning and downhill skiing techniques. To maximize learning and give each student as much one-on-one time with the guide/instructor as possible we keep these courses small and limited the number of participants in each to 4. Course locations and chosen ski venues will be dependent on snow and avalanche conditions at the time of the course, but will be loosely based out of the Crested Butte, Colorado backcountry.
Course will be instructed by an AMGA Certified Ski Mountaineering Guide and Crested Butte Mountain Guides senior staff member. Lodging discounts are available. Course may contain some additional costs such as snowcat ‘bumps’ to bigger terrain, overnight camping food, etc. If participants and instructors all agree on the appropriateness of these options; therefore the course format is intentionally held somewhat loose, so as to maximize snow conditions, and learning opportunities for the group.
